Cast

  • Jamie - Jamie used to be the top student. She is incredibly smart, so smart in fact, she was put into the grade ahead. She was also known for her kindness, as she always resolved issues almost immediately. Her family was well off and supportive, but Jamie never felt fully comfortable in her own skin. She started to experiment with drugs after being introduced to Blake who Jamie felt she could relate to. Taylor, Jamie’s other friend she met at school, refused to take part but still hung out with the group. Jamie would consume drugs any chance she got, and one day, while at a party, got into a fight with Lucy after Jamie became aggressive. Max broke the two apart, but still Jamie wouldn't back down. Jamie later apologised for her actions and Lucy agreed to meet at another time to talk things out. But she never showed. While at school, a few days later, Jamie consumed more drugs than usual and went into their regular history class, but never came out.

  • Blake - Blake grew up on the wrong side of town. His parents were never home and he was forced to look after his younger sister. He was always alone with no one to help him. He always seemed to be surrounded by people but no one ever stayed. Until Jamie. Jamie stayed and looked out for him. But being alone so often, especially with his own thoughts, began to take a toll. So he turned to the only thing he had seen help with this problem. Drugs. In doing so, he also introduced them to Jamie. But Jamie got carried away and overdose, and Blake felt that he was responsible. For introducing them to Jamie, for doing them with Jamie and for not stopping her when he could see she was in over her head. Then she died, and he was alone… again.

  • Taylor - Taylor is a bit of a people pleaser. She has spent her whole life making sure everyone around her is at their best but she has never stopped to look at herself. She has a fear of letting people down and so has a reputation for just saying ‘yes’. She is often taken advantage of and people tend to overlook her selflessness and dedication to other people. She never cared to participate in doing drugs with Jamie and Blake. But because of her people pleasing nature and the fact that she was scared her friends would leave her, she never expressed her concern. Then Jamie died, and Taylor couldn't help but feel responsible. For not saying anything, for not asking for help and, for letting down Jamie.

  • Lucy - Lucy is the girl who couldn't give the slightest care about you. She is known to have a resting bitch face which she probably got from her mother who is the most established lawyer in miles. She is headstrong, confident and will always voice her opinion. Because of this people tend to think she’s mean and so she often spends her time at school alone. But one night, while at a party, Jamie and Lucy got into a fight, and Lucy didn't hold back after Jamie started getting aggressive. Lucy through insult after insult at Jamie acting as verbal venom. Hours later, Jamie apologised and the two agreed to meet at another time to talk things out, but Lucy never showed. Then Jamie died and Lucy never apologised.

  • Max - Max is best friends with Lucy. Max is the typical class clown and often rejects her thoughts and feelings as she hates being vulnerable. So when her classmate dies, she is all over the place trying to figure out how to react and how to suppress her emotions. But it comes out as anxious rambling, and she can’t stop.

Makeup

The makeup for Liminal was natural as the characters are students in a school setting, so when it came to doing the actor's makeup, I decided to focus on studying the actor's face and applying makeup to anywhere that seemed necessary. This included covering blemishes, dark circles under the eyes, and discolouration around the nose and lips, along with applying light mascara, brushing and filling in brows, and occasionally applying blush and powder. A lot of the feminine presenting actors also came in with their makeup already done, so I focused on fixing their makeup in order to make it look natural, which involved removing mascara from the eyelid to create a 'no makeup' look. As the makeup applied depended on the condition of each actors skin on the day of filming, I could not make a face design for their looks but ensured I had all the necessary tools to make them look as clean and natural as possible

Due to the fast pace and the need to get all the actors prepared in a short amount of time, there was no time to get 'before' shots but below are the 'after' shots, taken after the actors wrapped on their first day of shooting

The location was at a school and the lighting was natural so I had to ensure that the actors didn't look too dark or too washed out, and I sterilized my tools before working on each actor to ensure that there was good hygiene

Actor Recommendations

- Malachi could benefit from a gel or clay cleanser to help with acne

- Daniel could benefit from a gel cleanser to help with acne, and a retinol serum for acne scars

- Sophia could benefit from a lip balm to assist with cracked lips

- Bridie could benefit from a foam cleanser to help with oily skin

I also applied Vaseline and Vicks VapouRub under the actors eyes to make their eyes water and make it look as though there were tears, creating the illusion that the characters had been crying.

BONUS: Yep, This is Happening

I also had the honour of helping two other students, Emily and Trung, with their film "Yep, This is Happening," turning their actors into zombies and survivors of the zombie apocalypse with the help of other makeup artists. The process involved applying fake blood, liquid latex, rigid collodion and brown and red eye shadow to the actors to create a rough look with lots of wounds, and fake blood to the white shirts of the actors playing the zombies in order to make it look as though they had been eating people.

I also had the privilege of recreating my gash look that I did for the gore challenge on one of the actors who was playing a zombie
